TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albanian novelist Ismail Kadare was awarded the Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor title by French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday. Macron arrived in Tirana after a summit of European Union leaders with Western Balkan countries earlier in the day. Before Albania installed political pluralism after a students’ protest in December 1990, Kadare flew to France asking for political asylum. UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia faces a tough fight to regain a seat in the U.N.’s premiere human rights body in Tuesday’s election in the General Assembly, which voted last year to suspend Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine. The 193-member assembly will be electing 15 members to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council, with candidates put forward by the U.N.’s five regional groups. Human Rights Watch said last week that Russia and China are unfit to serve on the Human Rights Council. The New York-based watchdog said China’s rights record should also disqualify it from the Human Rights Council. The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was created in 2006 to replace a commission discredited because of some members’ poor rights records.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia’s U.N. ambassador alleged Monday that “neo-Nazis” and military-age men were at the wake for a Ukrainian soldier in a village café where a missile last week killed 52 people, even as Security Council members retorted that Russia was responsible for starting the war and committing crimes. The café, which had reopened for the wake, was obliterated, and whole families perished. He insisted, as Moscow has in the past, that the Russian military doesn’t target civilians and civilian facilities. According to Ukrainian news reports, he was initially laid to rest elsewhere in Ukraine, as his native village remained under Russian occupation. Kozyr’s family decided to rebury him in Hroza more than 15 months after his death, following DNA tests that confirmed his identity.

The original architects, which included Hoxha's daughter Pranvera, designed the building in the shape of a pyramid glorifying the leader as an Egyptian-style pharaoh. The museum was finished in 1988, three years after Hoxha died and two years before reclusive Communist rule collapsed, giving way to democracy. "It was an architectural monument like no others," said Ilda Qazimllari, director of investments in the office of the Tirana mayor.

The bears' pools are regularly topped up with fresh water and their keepers hurl fruit and vegetables into the water to encourage the animals to swim. They also place frozen fruit and vegetables they dub "ice creams" up in the trees, where the bears find them in just a few seconds. "The temperatures are very high and their fur is very thick and it is not easy for them," said Taulant Hoxha, from the bear sanctuary.

After rampant fraud in Massachusetts briefly boosted claims to a 1-1/2-year high in May before being revised away, economists cautioned against reading too much into the latest rise. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 235,000 claims for the latest week. Unadjusted claims increased only 10,535 to 219,391 last week, with applications in Ohio surging 6,345 and filings in California shooting up 5,173. The Federal Reserve is expected to keep its policy rate unchanged next Wednesday for the first time since March 2022 when it embarked on its fastest interest rate hiking campaign since the 1980s. The U.S. central bank has raised its policy rate by 500 basis points since then.

April 12 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) on Wednesday announced a slew of changes to leadership in its equity trading division following the retirement of its top equity trader Joe Montesano last month, according to a memo seen by Reuters. Cyril Goddeeris will continue to lead global equity financing, which includes his responsibilities as co-head of global prime services and head of global securities lending and synthetic trading. Dimitrios Nikolakopoulos will lead global equity structured products. Dmitri Potishko and Erdit Hoxha will be co-heads of global flow derivatives and emerging markets trading.
